Writings of the Contemporary Novel in English

The ERCLA research centre was created in 1996 by François Gallix at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne and existed until 2009. From 2006 to 2009, the centre was part of VALE: Voix Anglophones: Littérature et Esthétique (EA4085) at Paris IV-Sorbonne.

This research centre aimed at looking thoroughly into the study of the creation of a book, and more particularly the various steps of the elaboration of the novel in English.

In order to have a multidisciplinary perspective and an essentially comparative reflection, this center gathered a wide range of 'actors' of the literary creation, study and exploitation (writing and adapting), but also people from various domains: publishing, criticism, journalism and translation. The technical aspects were covered: from the different steps in the writing process, the making-of, the conception of the book itself, to the final exploitation by mass-media and the reading of the book.

The participants belonged to the different worlds quoted above, and work in the various fields of the completion of a book: writers, editors, teachers, dummy makers, graphic designers, literary agents, booksellers, librarians, critics, journalists, translators, film-makers…
The center studied certain aspects before and after the reading process, such as literary creation, publishing, journalism, translation, theatrical and movie adaptations …

Activities: the center organized meetings, conferences or lectures with writers or other participants belonging to the above quoted domains.

The research team: it comprised professors, lecturers and scholars who take an active interest in these fields of reflection, but also academics from other French and foreign universities who wish to take part in this research center. Students preparing a Doctorate, or any post-graduate diploma were warmly welcome.
